    Route guide

Dubai to Al Khobar is a classic Eastern Province run: oil and gas staff heading back to Dhahran, families visiting relatives, and people moving to Khobar with a car full of belongings. The trip covers about 850 km and takes roughly 9 hours. A UAE driver brings you from your door to Al Ghuwaifat. You cross to the Saudi post by free shuttle bus or taxi, and a Saudi driver finishes the journey to your address in Khobar.

    Travel Time & Distance

    Duration

    ~9 hours

    Distance

    ~850 km

The full journey takes about 9 hours. The UAE leg through Abu Dhabi emirate is steady, the Saudi entry checks can add time, and arriving in Khobar after dark is common on a late start. Leave Dubai in the morning if you want to reach Khobar in daylight.

    Arriving in Khobar late

On an afternoon start you will probably reach Khobar in the evening. That is fine for a hotel on the Corniche or a home in Al Olaya, but compounds in Dhahran often have gate procedures for late arrivals. Let us know in advance and send any visitor pass details. If you have a meeting the next morning, a morning departure from Dubai is the more relaxed choice.

    Who takes this route

    • Energy sector staff returning to Dhahran and Khobar after leave in the Emirates
    • Families with young children and lots of luggage, who would rather not split bags across flights
    • People relocating to the Eastern Province with boxes, bikes or a pushchair
    • Travellers who prefer one booking from door to door over a flight plus two airport transfers

    Border Crossing Process

    UAE → Saudi Arabia

This route involves a coordinated border crossing between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Passengers are required to exit the vehicle and complete immigration and customs procedures in person. We arrange vehicles on both sides of the border to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer.

    1. 1Arrive at the UAE exit checkpoint at Al Ghuwaifat - passports stamped out
    2. 2Cross the border zone to the Saudi entry checkpoint at Al Batha
    3. 3Saudi visa and vehicle documentation processed
    4. 4Customs inspection and clearance
    5. 5Continue on Saudi highways to Al Khobar

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

    Entering Saudi Arabia by road

At Al Ghuwaifat your UAE driver drops you at the exit post. Saudi immigration checks your visa and passport, then customs looks at your bags. Your Saudi driver is waiting once you are through. Having your e-visa approved and printed before you leave Dubai saves time.

From your Dubai address to your door in Khobar

Pick-up works from any Dubai address, including Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, JLT, Downtown Dubai and Dubai International (DXB). Drop-off is anywhere in Al Khobar, such as Al Olaya, Al Thuqbah, Al Rakah or the Corniche, and next door in Dhahran.

    Travel Documents & Customs Requirements

Passengers are responsible for valid passports, visas and entry permits, and compliance with customs rules in every country on the route.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is a Saudi visa required?

Most non-GCC travellers need one. Saudi Arabia offers an e-visa for many nationalities, so check the rules for your passport before booking. GCC nationals enter freely.

How long will I spend at the border?

Expect 30 to 60 minutes at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha on a normal day, more around holidays.

Can you drop me in Dhahran instead of central Khobar?

Yes. Dhahran, Khobar and the wider Eastern Province are all covered, so give us the exact address.

Will we stop on the way?

Yes. Your drivers plan breaks for food, prayer and stretching your legs on both sides of the border.

    What if flights are impacted?

If flights are impacted, Platinumride can arrange private cross-border ground transfers between major Gulf hubs as a reliable alternative to air travel.

How much is a private transfer from Dubai to Al Khobar?

Sedan from AED 4,400, SUV from AED 6,700, van from AED 7,700 and luxury from AED 8,800. That is the price per vehicle, and the final figure depends on your exact pick-up and drop-off.

    Are fuel and tolls included?

Yes. Fuel, road tolls and border assistance are included. Visas and any entry fees are not. The taxi between the two border posts at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha, if you choose it instead of the free shuttle bus, is also paid locally.

    Can I bring children?

Of course. Child seats are free on request.

How much waiting time is included at pick-up?

Fifteen minutes free at a home or hotel, and 60 minutes after landing for airport pick-ups.
