    Route guide

Dubai to Riyadh is a full day on the road. You head west past Abu Dhabi to the Saudi border at Al Ghuwaifat, switch to a second car after clearing both posts, and continue across the desert to the capital. Business travellers moving between the two hubs book it often, as do families relocating and people bringing more luggage than a flight would allow.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~11 hours

    Distance

    ~1,000 km

Allow around 11 hours. Dubai traffic on the way out, the border queue and rest stops on the Saudi highway all shape the total. Evening departures are popular because the roads are quieter and you reach Riyadh early the next morning.

How the 11 hours break down

    • Dubai to the UAE exit post at Al Ghuwaifat: about 4 to 4.5 hours, depending on how quickly you get out of the city.
    • Formalities on both sides of the border: usually 30 to 60 minutes.
    • Al Batha to Riyadh with your Saudi driver: around 5.5 to 6 hours, including a rest stop.
    • Add a little extra on Eid, national holidays and long weekends, when the crossing is busier.

    Relocating to Riyadh by road

Many people moving between Dubai and Riyadh for work find the road the easiest way to bring their belongings. The van takes far more than an airline allowance, and there are no excess baggage charges. At the border you cross between the posts by free shuttle bus or taxi, so pack in pieces you can manage. Your Saudi driver then loads everything into the second vehicle for the rest of the journey.

    Border crossing process

    Al Ghuwaifat → Al Batha

Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side.

    3. 3Cross to the Saudi post at Al Batha by free shuttle bus or taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally)
    4. 4Saudi entry: passport, visa and customs checks
    5. 5Your Saudi driver meets you and continues to Riyadh

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.
