    Route guide

From Doha, the road to Abu Dhabi heads south out of Qatar at Abu Samra, crosses a short stretch of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and enters the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat. Travellers who pick this route over a short flight usually have a reason: a car full of luggage, young children, pets in carriers or a schedule that does not fit the timetable. You leave from your own address in Doha and arrive at your hotel, villa or office in the UAE capital.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~6–7 hours

    Distance

    ~600 km

Expect around 6-7 hours. Most of the variation comes from the queues at Abu Samra and at Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat, plus traffic leaving Doha at rush hour. A rest stop on the Saudi side adds a few minutes but keeps the day comfortable.

Arriving in Abu Dhabi after dark

Leave Doha after lunch and you will usually reach Abu Dhabi in the evening. That suits people who want a full morning at home before they go, or who are heading straight to a hotel. Your UAE driver takes you to the entrance, helps with bags and does not leave until you are inside. If you would rather arrive in daylight, an early-morning start is the simple fix.

    Border crossing process

Qatar → Saudi Arabia → UAE

This route crosses 2 borders, each with its own arrangement. At Abu Samra / Salwa: You stay in the same car, with your luggage on board. At Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat: Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about SAR 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side.

    1. 1Qatari exit passport control at Abu Samra, staying with your car
    2. 2Saudi entry at Salwa: passport, visa and customs checks
    3. 3Continue in the same car to the Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat border
    4. 4Your Saudi driver drops you at the Al Batha exit post
    5. 5Saudi exit passport control
    6. 6Cross to the UAE post at Al Ghuwaifat by free shuttle bus or taxi (about SAR 300-400, paid locally)
    7. 7UAE entry: passport, visa and customs checks
    8. 8Your UAE driver meets you and continues to Abu Dhabi

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

    Packing for a two-border day

    • Keep passports, visas and any residence cards in one easy-to-reach bag.
    • Pack so each person can wheel their own case, which makes the handover at Al Batha easier.
    • Bring snacks and a light layer for air-conditioned halls.
    • Have a little cash in local currency for small purchases at the border.
