Riyadh airport disruption: getting to and from Riyadh by road

Flights at King Khalid International Airport (RUH) have been disrupted since 11 October 2026, and airlines are restoring services in stages. Many travellers are flying into Bahrain or other Gulf airports and continuing to Riyadh by road, or driving from Doha, Kuwait or the UAE. Always check the latest status with your airline and the airport before you travel.

Which airport to fly into instead

    AirportDrive to RiyadhBorderGood to know
Bahrain International (BAH)about 5.5 hoursKing Fahd CausewayThe closest international option outside Saudi Arabia. Causeway processing varies by time of day.
Dammam King Fahd International (DMM)about 4 hoursNo international borderA domestic road journey, so no second immigration check after landing in Saudi Arabia.
Doha Hamad International (DOH)about 8 hoursAbu Samra / SalwaOne car the whole way, no vehicle change.
Kuwait International (KWI)about 8–9 hoursNuwaiseeb / Al KhafjiMany international flights currently use Terminal 4. Confirm your terminal with the airline.
Dubai (DXB) / Abu Dhabi (AUH)about 11 hours from Dubai, about 10 hours from Abu DhabiAl Ghuwaifat / Al BathaA long day's drive, best for travellers already in the UAE.

Bahrain International (BAH): Bahrain is the shortest cross-border option. After landing, the road crosses the King Fahd Causeway into the Eastern Province and continues inland to Riyadh. Processing at the Causeway varies by time of day, so the total journey can differ from the drive time shown.

Dammam King Fahd International (DMM): Dammam keeps the whole trip inside Saudi Arabia. You clear immigration once on arrival, then the drive to Riyadh is a domestic road journey with no border on the way.

Doha Hamad International (DOH): From Doha, the route crosses at Abu Samra and Salwa. The journey is completed in the same vehicle, so there is no change of car at the border.

Kuwait International (KWI): From Kuwait, the road heads south to the Nuwaiseeb and Al Khafji crossing, then on to Riyadh. Many international flights currently use Terminal 4, but check the terminal on your latest flight details before collection.

Dubai (DXB) / Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Abu Dhabi airport: Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the longest options and suit travellers who are already in the UAE. The route enters Saudi Arabia at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha and is a long day on the road.

Other ways to reach Riyadh without flying

For travellers arriving at Dammam, the passenger train between Dammam and Riyadh run by Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) is an option. Check timetables, availability and tickets directly with SAR.

Self-drive in a rental car is also possible. Cross-border rental rules vary by company and country, so confirm with the rental provider whether the car can cross a border and which documents are needed.

A private transfer suits groups, families with luggage, travellers who want to go door to door, and anyone who prefers to have the border arrangements handled.

Flying into Bahrain and continuing by road

Bahrain International Airport can be an arrival point for an onward road journey to Riyadh via the King Fahd Causeway. Check your flight and Saudi entry requirements before choosing this option. See Bahrain airport transfers and the Bahrain to Riyadh route for collection and journey details.
