    Route guide

Abu Dhabi to Riyadh is a long, straight run west and then inland, around 950 km from the UAE capital to the Saudi one. The single border at Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha is where your first car hands over to a Saudi driver. Business travellers heading to KAFD, people with meetings at government offices and families joining a new posting in Riyadh all use this route, often overnight so they wake up close to arrival.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~10 hours

    Distance

    ~950 km

Allow about 10 hours. Border processing is usually 30 to 60 minutes, and the rest is open highway with rest stops. Leaving Abu Dhabi outside the morning commute helps, and night departures avoid the midday heat on the Saudi side.

    Road or air to Riyadh?

The flight from Abu Dhabi is around 2 hours. Add the trip to AUH, check-in, security and the taxi at the other end and most of a day is gone anyway. The drive takes longer, but you leave when you want, carry what you need and arrive at the door. It tends to win for families, people moving with lots of luggage and anyone who would rather sleep through an overnight run than sit in a terminal.

    4. 4Saudi entry: passport, visa and customs checks
    5. 5Your Saudi driver meets you and continues to Riyadh

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

The car swap at Al Ghuwaifat

Your UAE driver takes you to the exit post at Al Ghuwaifat. You get stamped out and take your luggage with you. Once Saudi entry and customs are done, your second driver is waiting to continue to Riyadh. Keep a small bag with water and documents close, since you handle your own bags here.
