    Route guide

Going from Abu Dhabi to Muscat by road means heading inland through Al Ain and crossing near Mezyad, well away from Dubai traffic. It is popular with UAE residents taking a long weekend in Oman and with business travellers who would rather skip the airport. At the border you change cars: your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point, confirmed before the trip, and takes you to your hotel or home in Muscat.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~5–6 hours

    Distance

    ~500 km

The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours. The first stretch, from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain, is roughly 1.5 hours, and the crossing is the part that varies most. Long weekends and public holidays bring longer queues heading into Oman, so a weekday departure is usually smoother.

A long weekend in Oman, without the airport

Many passengers on this route are Abu Dhabi residents heading to Muscat for a few days. Count the whole trip and the road makes sense: getting to the airport, check-in, the flight and a taxi on arrival take up much of the day anyway. By car you leave from your door, bring as much luggage as the vehicle holds and get out at your hotel. You can book the return at the same time.

    Border crossing process

    Al Ain / Mezyad

Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point at the border. We confirm the exact point with you before the trip.

    1. 1Your UAE driver takes you to the Mezyad exit post
    2. 2UAE exit passport control
    3. 3Omani entry at Hafeet: passport, visa and customs checks
    4. 4Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point and continues to Muscat

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

Changing cars at the Omani border

    • The UAE driver drops you at the exit post, where your passports are stamped out.
    • We confirm the exact handover point with you before the trip. Suitcases you can wheel yourself make it easier.
    • Omani immigration and customs are handled in person. Check the entry rules for your passport before travelling.
    • A second driver meets you on the Omani side and drives you the rest of the way to Muscat.
