    Route guide

From the capital, the drive west to the Eastern Province is shorter than many expect. Leaving Abu Dhabi skips the Dubai traffic, so the run to Al Ghuwaifat starts on open road. At the border you step out, clear both posts with your bags, and a second Platinumride driver meets you in Saudi Arabia for the stretch to Dammam, Al Khobar or Dhahran. Energy-sector professionals and families visiting relatives in the Eastern Province are regular passengers.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~8–9 hours

    Distance

    ~700 km

Plan on about 8 to 9 hours door to door. The border is the main variable: 30 to 60 minutes on a normal day, longer around Eid and long weekends. An early start from Abu Dhabi also means arriving in Dammam before the evening traffic builds.

    Who this route suits

Three kinds of traveller tend to book it. Professionals rotating between Abu Dhabi and the Eastern Province, who would rather work from the back seat than lose a day to flight connections. Families heading to Al Khobar for a weekend with relatives, carrying more than an airline allows. And residents relocating between the two cities, who use the van for boxes and suitcases. Since the fare is per vehicle, a full car costs the same as one passenger.

    Border crossing process

    Al Ghuwaifat → Al Batha

Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side.

    2. 2UAE exit passport control
    3. 3Cross to the Saudi post at Al Batha by free shuttle bus or taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally)
    4. 4Saudi entry: passport, visa and customs checks
    5. 5Your Saudi driver meets you and continues to Dammam

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

    What happens at Al Ghuwaifat

    • Your first driver stops at the UAE exit post and helps you unload your luggage.
    • Saudi immigration and customs check you and your bags in person.
    • Your second driver is already waiting on the Saudi side and loads everything for the rest of the drive to Dammam.
