    Route guide

Heading out of the Eastern Province, this transfer takes you from Dammam, Al Khobar or Dhahran to the UAE capital without an airport in sight. A Saudi driver brings you to Al Batha, where you leave the car, clear exit control and cross to the UAE post by free shuttle bus or taxi. On the UAE side a second driver takes over for the final stretch into Abu Dhabi. It suits weekend visitors, business trips to the capital and anyone moving with a lot of bags.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~8–9 hours

    Distance

    ~700 km

Expect roughly 8 to 9 hours. Formalities at Al Batha and Al Ghuwaifat usually take 30 to 60 minutes, and departures on the eve of a weekend or public holiday can mean longer queues. Your arrival time in Abu Dhabi also shifts with the capital's rush hour.

    Best time to leave Dammam

An early morning start is the most popular choice. You reach the border while it is relatively calm and get into Abu Dhabi by early afternoon, ahead of the evening traffic. If you are leaving after work, a late afternoon departure still lands you in the capital late at night. If your dates are flexible, avoid the first day of Eid or a long weekend, when queues at the crossing grow.

    Border crossing process

    Al Batha → Al Ghuwaifat

Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about SAR 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side.

    2. 2Saudi exit passport control
    3. 3Cross to the UAE post at Al Ghuwaifat by free shuttle bus or taxi (about SAR 300-400, paid locally)
    4. 4UAE entry: passport, visa and customs checks
    5. 5Your UAE driver meets you and continues to Abu Dhabi

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

Changing cars at the UAE border

The Saudi car stops at the Al Batha exit post. After UAE immigration and a customs check, your second driver is waiting to load up and continue. Keep passports and any visa printouts in your hand luggage, not in the suitcase.
