Route guide
From the Eastern Province, Doha is about 350 km and 5 hours by road. You leave Dammam, Al Khobar or Dhahran, head south to the Salwa border and enter Qatar at Abu Samra, with the same car and driver from start to finish. The route suits energy-sector staff with business in Qatar, families spending a weekend in Doha, and anyone who would rather skip the drive out to King Fahd International for a short flight.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~5 hours
Distance
~350 km
Most trips take about 5 hours. The Salwa crossing is the main variable and can be slower at weekends and during holidays. Allow extra time if you are leaving Al Khobar at the evening peak. Once in Qatar, the final leg to Doha is usually straightforward.
Weekends and holidays in Doha
Plenty of Eastern Province residents drive to Doha for a long weekend or the Eid break. Those are also the busiest times at the border, so book early and pick an off-peak departure if you can. The first day of a holiday tends to be the most crowded. If your dates are flexible, a weekday trip usually means a shorter wait at Salwa.
Border crossing process
Abu Samra
This route involves a direct land crossing between Qatar and Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra border. The journey is completed in the same vehicle, with no vehicle change required.
- 1Arrive at the Saudi exit checkpoint at Salwa - passports stamped out
- 2Drive through the border zone to the Qatari entry checkpoint at Abu Samra
- 3Qatar entry visa processed (visa-on-arrival available for most nationalities)
- 4Customs inspection and clearance
- 5Continue north to Doha
At the Salwa border
- Saudi exit formalities are handled at Salwa
- The car drives through the border zone to Qatar's post at Abu Samra
- Qatar entry and customs checks take place there, with your luggage still in the car
- Your driver handles the vehicle papers, so you only need your passport and any Qatar visa
Pick‑up in the Eastern Province, drop‑off in Doha
Travel documents & customs requirements
Passengers are responsible for valid passports, visas and entry permits, and compliance with customs rules in every country on the route.
