    Route guide

Doha to Dammam is a short cross-border run by Gulf standards, around 5 hours and 350 km with one border at Abu Samra and Salwa. The same car and driver take you the whole way, so your bags stay in the boot. It is used mostly by business travellers heading to the Eastern Province's energy and industrial hubs, Qatar residents visiting family, and people catching flights from King Fahd International.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~5 hours

    Distance

    ~350 km

The drive takes about 5 hours. Time at Abu Samra and Salwa is the biggest variable and grows around holidays. Leaving Doha mid-morning avoids city traffic on the way out, and arriving in Al Khobar or Dammam before the evening rush keeps the last stretch quick.

    Driving vs flying to Dammam

The flight from Doha takes about an hour, but door to door it rarely comes in much under 3 or 4 hours once you add the airport, security, boarding and the taxi from DMM, which sits well outside the city. By road it's about 5 hours from your door, with room for your luggage within the vehicle's capacity and no check-in deadline.

    Border crossing process

    Abu Samra

This route involves a direct land crossing between Qatar and Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra border. The journey is completed in the same vehicle, with no vehicle change required.

    1. 1Arrive at the Qatari exit checkpoint at Abu Samra - passports stamped out
    2. 2Drive through the border zone to the Saudi entry checkpoint at Salwa
    3. 3Saudi visa and vehicle documentation processed
    4. 4Customs inspection and clearance
    5. 5Continue north through Saudi Arabia to Dammam

One car, one driver, one border

At Abu Samra your passport is stamped out of Qatar. The car then crosses the border zone to Salwa, where Saudi entry and the vehicle papers are processed and customs inspects the car and bags. You may be asked to step out for checks, but there is no change of vehicle and your luggage stays in the car. Once cleared, the same driver continues to your address in the Dammam area.
