    Route guide

From Riyadh, the drive to Muscat heads east across Saudi Arabia, enters the UAE at Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat and finishes through the Hatta border into Oman. At about 1,400 km it is a two-day trip for most people. Riyadh residents heading for the Omani coast and mountains, families relocating and travellers combining a UAE stay with Oman use it. Each country has its own driver, coordinated in advance.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,400 km

Plan for about 2 days. The Saudi highway to the UAE border is a long first stretch, and there are two border crossings to clear. An overnight in the UAE splits the trip well, leaving a shorter second day through Hatta to Muscat.

    Where to break the journey

Most travellers stop overnight in the UAE after crossing from Saudi Arabia. Abu Dhabi or Dubai both work, depending on where you have friends or a favourite hotel. The next morning, a UAE driver takes you to Hatta for Oman entry, and from there it is on to Muscat. You book the hotel; we line up the drivers around it.

At Hatta / Al Wajajah: After exit control, a shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally). Your next driver is waiting just past the border.
