Route guide
Heading east from Riyadh, the drive to Bahrain is mostly open highway until the final crossing on the King Fahd Causeway. At around 450 km, it's a comfortable half-day trip. Riyadh residents book it for weekends in Manama, families go for the sea, and executives with meetings in Bahrain like starting the day at their own front door. One car and one driver cover the whole way.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~5.5 hours
Distance
~450 km
The trip takes about 5.5 hours. Getting out of Riyadh at peak times can add a little, and the causeway is the main variable: Thursday evenings and the start of public holidays bring heavy traffic into Bahrain. A morning or midday departure on a weekday is usually easiest.
Weekend timing
A lot of the traffic on this route is weekend traffic. If you can leave on a Wednesday or early on Thursday, you'll usually miss the worst of the causeway queues. For the return, Saturday evening is when most cars head back to Saudi Arabia. Over Eid and long holidays both directions get heavy, so book early and allow extra time at the border.
Border crossing process
King Fahd Causeway
This route crosses the King Fahd Causeway between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Unlike other borders, the journey is completed in the same vehicle, without a vehicle change.
- 1Arrive at the Saudi exit checkpoint - passports stamped out
- 2Drive across the causeway to the Bahraini entry checkpoint
- 3Bahrain entry visa processed
- 4Customs inspection and clearance
- 5Continue into Bahrain
What to prepare before the causeway
- Passports for everyone in the car, kept in the cabin rather than the boot
- Bahrain visa details, checked against the rules for your passport before you leave
- Your Saudi residence ID if you live in the kingdom
- Flight details if you're heading straight to Bahrain International Airport, so we can plan the departure time
Collected in Riyadh, dropped across Bahrain
Your driver can meet you anywhere in Riyadh, including Olaya, Hittin, Al Malqa, the Diplomatic Quarter or King Khalid International Airport (RUH). In Bahrain we drop off at hotels and homes in Manama, Juffair, Seef, Amwaj Islands and Riffa, or at Bahrain International Airport (BAH).
