All travel guidesHow long is the drive from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh?
The published distance is about 950 km. Allow about 10 hours. Border processing is usually 30 to 60 minutes, and the rest is open highway with rest stops. Leaving Abu Dhabi outside the morning commute helps, and night departures avoid the midday heat on the Saudi side.
What the journey looks like
The route heads west from Abu Dhabi along the coastal highway towards the Saudi border, then crosses the open interior of the Kingdom on long, straight highways into Riyadh.
Which border crossing is used?
The crossing is at Al Ghuwaifat on the UAE side and Al Batha on the Saudi side. After UAE exit control at Al Ghuwaifat, you cross to the Saudi post at Al Batha by the free shuttle bus, or by local taxi for about AED or SAR 300 to 400, paid locally. Your Saudi driver is waiting on the other side.
What travel documents do I need?
Carry the passport linked to your visa or entry permission. Entry rules depend on nationality, residency and itinerary, so check current requirements with official immigration sources before you book. Border authorities decide admission, and travellers are responsible for their own visas.
