    Route guide

Leaving Muscat for Al Khobar means a two-country transit before you reach the Eastern Province: about 1,200 km, best spread over 2 days. People who take it are often relocating to Khobar or Dhahran, or returning after a posting in Oman with more belongings than a flight allows. You change vehicles at Hatta and again at the Saudi border, crossing between the posts by shuttle bus (or taxi at Al Ghuwaifat), and your last driver delivers you to your door in Khobar.

    Travel Time & Distance

    Duration

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,200 km

Plan for 2 days. Day one usually covers Muscat, the Hatta crossing and a night in the UAE. Day two is the run to Al Ghuwaifat, the Saudi entry and the final stretch to Khobar, arriving by evening on a morning start.

    What to keep with you

    • Passports and visas for the UAE and Saudi Arabia in one easy-to-reach place
    • A small overnight bag for the UAE hotel, so the main cases can stay packed
    • Snacks, water and any medication for the long stretches of desert between towns
    • Phone chargers and a power bank, since you will message us at each handover

    Border Crossing Process

Oman → UAE → Saudi Arabia

This route involves coordinated border crossings between Oman, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Passengers exit the vehicle at each checkpoint to complete immigration and customs procedures. We organise vehicles at each border to ensure smooth transitions.

    1. 1Arrive at the Oman exit checkpoint at Hatta - passports stamped out
    2. 2Enter the UAE at Hatta - UAE transit processed
    3. 3Drive through the UAE to Al Ghuwaifat
    4. 4Exit the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat - passports stamped out
    5. 5Enter Saudi Arabia at Al Batha - Saudi visa processed
    6. 6Continue to Al Khobar

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many borders will we cross?

Two: Oman to the UAE at Hatta, then the UAE to Saudi Arabia at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha.

Do I need UAE and Saudi visas?

That depends on your nationality. Check the UAE and Saudi rules for your passport. Saudi Arabia offers an e-visa for many nationalities, and GCC nationals travel freely.

Is an overnight in the UAE possible?

Yes, and we recommend it. We will schedule the second day around your hotel.

Where in Muscat can you pick me up?

Any address in Muscat, including Qurum, Al Khuwair, Al Mouj and Muscat International Airport (MCT).

    What if flights are impacted?

If flights are impacted, Platinumride can arrange private cross-border ground transfers between major Gulf hubs as a reliable alternative to air travel.

How much is a private transfer from Muscat to Al Khobar?

From AED 7,500 for a sedan, from AED 10,900 for an SUV, from AED 12,400 for a van and from AED 13,100 for a luxury car, per vehicle. Exact pick-up, drop-off and your overnight plan set the final price.

Can it be done in a single day?

It is possible, but with two borders it is a very long day. Most travellers prefer the overnight.

    Are child seats available?

Yes, free on request, and we pass them on at each handover.

What is included in the price?

Fuel, tolls and border assistance. Hotels, visas and entry fees are extra. The taxi between the two border posts at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha, if you choose it instead of the free shuttle bus, is also paid locally.
