    Route guide

Al Khobar to Muscat is the longest road trip we run from the Eastern Province: about 1,200 km across three countries, usually split over 2 days. It appeals to families who want to see the UAE on the way, and to people moving to Oman with a lot to carry. You change vehicles at the Saudi-UAE border and again at Hatta, crossing between the posts by shuttle bus (or taxi at Al Batha), with a fresh driver waiting each time.

    Travel Time & Distance

    Duration

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,200 km

We recommend 2 days. A sensible plan is Khobar to the UAE on day one, a night in a hotel, then the Hatta crossing and the drive to Muscat on day two. Two borders in one day is possible but tiring.

    Planning the overnight stop

The overnight is what makes this route comfortable. Choose your UAE stop based on how far you want to drive on day one and whether you want an evening out. Tell us where you would like to stay and we will plan pick-up times around it. Keep an overnight bag separate from the main luggage so you do not have to unpack the whole car at the hotel.

    Border Crossing Process

Saudi Arabia → UAE → Oman

This route involves coordinated border crossings between Oman, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Passengers exit the vehicle at each checkpoint to complete immigration and customs procedures. We organise vehicles at each border to ensure smooth transitions.

    1. 1Arrive at the Saudi exit checkpoint at Al Batha - passports stamped out
    2. 2Enter the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat - UAE transit processed
    3. 3Drive through the UAE to the Hatta border
    4. 4Exit the UAE and enter Oman at Hatta - Oman visa processed
    5. 5Continue on the Batinah Expressway to Muscat

A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.

    Two borders, one plan

    • Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat: Saudi exit, free shuttle bus or taxi, then UAE entry
    • Hatta, usually on day two: UAE exit, then Oman entry, with Oman visa checks
    • A new driver meets you after each crossing, so nobody drives the whole way

Possibly a UAE visa and an Oman visa, depending on your passport. Check the rules for both countries before you travel. GCC nationals move freely.
