Route guide
Muscat to Dubai takes you up the Omani coast and inland to the Hatta crossing, then over the mountains into Dubai. At about 400 km, it's short enough for a morning departure and an afternoon arrival. Travellers heading home after a holiday in Oman book it, as do business visitors moving on to Dubai and families with more luggage than a flight allows. You'll switch cars at the border.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~5–6 hours
Distance
~400 km
Allow 5 to 6 hours. The Oman exit and UAE entry at Hatta are the main variable, especially at the end of long weekends when traffic heads back to the UAE. Reaching Dubai during evening rush hour can also slow the final stretch.
Flying out of Dubai after the drive
If you're catching a flight from DXB or DWC, share your departure time when you book. We work back from it, allowing for the border and Dubai traffic, so you reach the terminal with a comfortable margin. For an evening flight, a morning departure from Muscat leaves plenty of slack, even on a slow day at Hatta.
Border crossing process
Hatta border
After exit control, a shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally). Your next driver is waiting just past the border.
- 1Your Omani driver drops you at the Al Wajajah exit post
- 2Omani exit passport control
- 3A shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally)
- 4UAE entry at Hatta: passport, visa and customs checks
- 5Your next driver is waiting just past the border and continues to Dubai
A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.
At the Hatta border, step by step
- Your Omani driver drops you at the Oman exit post
- You clear Oman exit and UAE entry, with a shuttle bus between the posts
- UAE entry rules depend on your passport, so check them before you travel
- Customs clearance follows passport control
- Your second driver meets you on the UAE side and continues to Dubai
