    Route guide

Muscat to Dammam means crossing the whole of the UAE before you reach Saudi Arabia: out of Oman at Hatta, across the Emirates, then into Saudi Arabia at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha. At around 1,200 km, most people split it over two days with a night in the UAE. It is booked mostly by families relocating, workers moving between postings, and travellers who want their belongings with them rather than in cargo.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,200 km

We recommend two days. The full distance is too long for a comfortable single day once two borders are added, and a night in Dubai or Abu Dhabi breaks it neatly. Waiting time at Hatta and Al Ghuwaifat is the main variable, so aim to reach each crossing in daylight.

How the route splits over two days

Day one usually runs from Muscat to Hatta, through the border into the UAE, and on to a hotel of your choice for the night. Day two continues west to Al Ghuwaifat, across into Saudi Arabia at Al Batha, and up through the Eastern Province to Dammam. Splitting it this way means one border per day and a proper night's sleep. Tell us where you'd like to stop and we will plan the timings around it.

    Border crossing process

At Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha: Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about AED 300-400, paid locally).
