    Route guide

Leaving Dammam for Muscat, you drive south through the Eastern Province to Al Batha, cross into the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat, then exit again at Hatta into Oman. It is roughly 1,200 km and best done over two days. The route is popular with expat families moving to Oman, Saudi residents planning a holiday on Oman's coast and in its mountains, and anyone moving belongings by car rather than freight.

    ~2 days recommended

    Distance

    ~1,200 km

Plan for two days. The first border comes after the long run south through the Eastern Province, and the Hatta crossing sits on the far side of the UAE. Most travellers stop overnight in the Emirates. Rush-hour traffic around Dubai can also slow the run towards Hatta.

    Relocating to Oman by road

When you move by car, there is no airline baggage allowance: your luggage travels with you, within the vehicle's capacity. An SUV or van holds suitcases, boxes and a pushchair with room to spare. Your bags stay with you at each border handover, so pack in pieces you can lift and wheel. Keep documents, medication and anything valuable in a separate bag that stays with you throughout the two days.

    Border crossing process

Saudi Arabia → UAE → Oman

This route crosses 2 borders, each with its own arrangement. At Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat: Your first driver takes you to the exit post. After passport control, you cross to the other post by free shuttle bus or by taxi (about SAR 300-400, paid locally). Your second driver is waiting on the other side. At Hatta / Al Wajajah: After exit control, a shuttle bus takes you between the two posts (a small fee may apply for the last leg, paid locally). Your next driver is waiting just past the border.

    Two exits, two entries

Your Saudi driver takes you to the exit post at Al Batha. A UAE driver picks you up and crosses the country with you. At Hatta you change once more after clearing UAE exit and Omani entry, and an Omani driver finishes the trip to Muscat.
