Plan on about 5 hours. Getting out of Doha at peak hour and the Saudi entry checks at Salwa are what change the timing. Early morning departures usually give the quickest border and an arrival in Khobar around lunchtime.
Driving vs flying to the Eastern Province
A flight from Doha to Dammam is short, but door to door you still have the airport run, check-in, security and then the drive from DMM, which sits well north of Khobar. By road it is about 5 hours from your door to your destination, with room for your luggage within the vehicle's capacity. For families, or anyone with luggage, the car is often the simpler option.
Border Crossing Process
Abu Samra
This route involves a direct land crossing between Qatar and Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra border. The journey is completed in the same vehicle, with no vehicle change required.

Your driver stops first at the Qatari exit post at Abu Samra, then continues to Saudi immigration at Salwa. Have your passport and approved visa ready to hand. Customs may check the car and luggage. There is no change of vehicle, so once the formalities are done you simply carry on north with the same driver to Khobar.
