Route guide
Doha to Kuwait is a long day crossing three countries. You leave Qatar at Abu Samra, head north through Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and enter Kuwait at Nuwaiseeb. Expats relocating between the two cities, families visiting relatives and travellers who'd rather avoid flights make up most bookings. Expect a change of car along the way, with a fresh driver for the second part of the trip.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~10–11 hours
Distance
~750 km
Plan for 10 to 11 hours. The two border crossings take a good share of that, with exit and entry checks at Abu Samra and Salwa, then again at Al Khafji and Nuwaiseeb. The Saudi section in between is long, so rest stops are built into the day.
Why drive it instead of flying
There's no shortage of flights between Doha and Kuwait, and for a quick solo trip, flying wins. The drive makes sense when you're moving with a lot of luggage, travelling as a family or group, or carrying things you'd rather not check in. The price is per vehicle, so four people pay the same as one, and nobody has to queue at an airport.
Border crossing process
Qatar → Saudi Arabia → Kuwait
This route crosses 2 borders, each with its own arrangement. At Abu Samra / Salwa: You stay in the same car, with your luggage on board. At Al Khafji / Al Nuwaiseeb: Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point at the border. We confirm the exact point with you before the trip.
- 1Qatari exit passport control at Abu Samra, staying with your car
- 2Saudi entry at Salwa: passport, visa and customs checks
- 3Continue in the same car to the Al Khafji / Al Nuwaiseeb border
- 4Your Saudi driver takes you to the Al Khafji exit post
- 5Saudi exit passport control
- 6Kuwaiti entry at Al Nuwaiseeb: passport, visa and customs checks
- 7Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point and continues to Kuwait
A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.
