Route guide
Kuwait to Bahrain is a popular weekend escape and a regular trip for families and business visitors. You leave Kuwait at Nuwaiseeb, drive south along Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast and finish on the King Fahd Causeway, arriving in Bahrain by road. There are two sets of border formalities and a planned change of car, all arranged before you set off, so the day runs to a timetable rather than a guess.
Travel time & distance
Duration
~7–8 hours
Distance
~500 km
The journey runs to about 7-8 hours. Leaving Kuwait City early avoids the worst of the morning traffic. On the way in, the causeway can be slow on weekend evenings, so a midweek or morning arrival is usually quicker.
A weekend in Bahrain without the airport
Plenty of Kuwait residents use this route for a long weekend. Leave on Thursday morning, arrive in time for a late lunch in Manama, and keep the whole family and its luggage together in one vehicle on each leg. Booking the return at the same time keeps things simple. Child seats are free on request, which helps with younger travellers.
Border crossing process
Kuwait → Saudi Arabia → King Fahd Causeway
This route crosses 2 borders, each with its own arrangement. At Al Nuwaiseeb / Al Khafji: Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point at the border. We confirm the exact point with you before the trip. At the King Fahd Causeway: You stay in the same car, with your luggage on board.
- 1Your Kuwaiti driver takes you to the Al Nuwaiseeb exit post
- 2Kuwaiti exit passport control
- 3Saudi entry at Al Khafji: passport, visa and customs checks
- 4Your next driver meets you at the agreed handover point and continues to the the King Fahd Causeway border
- 5Saudi exit passport control at the Saudi side of the King Fahd Causeway, staying with your car
- 6Bahraini entry at the Bahraini side of the King Fahd Causeway: passport, visa and customs checks
- 7Continue in the same car to Bahrain
A second vehicle with a fresh driver will be waiting after the border to continue your journey. The entire process is coordinated in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a seamless experience.
