    Route guide

Heading south from Kuwait to Abu Dhabi, you cross out at Nuwaiseeb, drive down through eastern Saudi Arabia and enter the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat. It is a full day on the road, so it tends to attract people with a reason to drive: Kuwaiti families visiting the capital, expats relocating, and travellers bringing more than a suitcase or two. The journey takes 15 to 16 hours with one change of car.

    Travel time & distance

    Duration

    ~15–16 hours

    Distance

    ~1,150 km

Most trips take 15 to 16 hours. Time at the Nuwaiseeb and Al Batha posts varies most, especially around Eid and school holidays. Leaving Kuwait late in the evening is popular, as you reach the UAE border in the morning and arrive in Abu Dhabi around midday.

Driving vs flying to Abu Dhabi

The flight is around 2 hours. Add the airport run, check-in, security, boarding and the taxi at the other end, and door to door is closer to 5 or 6 hours. By road it's 15 to 16 hours, but you skip baggage fees, queues and rebookings. For a family moving with a car full of luggage, or anyone who would rather sleep on the back seat than in a departure lounge, the drive can make more sense.
